Attempts to smuggle $1.3 million worth of heroin and 369 pounds of marijuana into the United States via San Diego ports of entry were thwarted on Monday, border officials announced Wednesday.
The heroin was found inside a hidden compartment built into the wheels of a vehicle driven by a 46-year-old Mexican citizen, who lives in San Diego, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The total weight of the heroin was approximately 93 pounds.
In a separate bust, the marijuana was found hidden in produce being trucked into the country aboard a tractor-trailer, according to the agency. The marijuana has an estimated street value of $221,400.
That vehicle was driven by a 29-year-old Mexican citizen who lives in Ensenada, according to the agency.
Drivers in both busts were taken into custody.
