In the last two years, Mexican officials have regularly touted Baja California's success in cracking down on organized crime. But in an effort to improve its use of intelligence and technology, Baja state police will get training from the Israeli National Police in the near future.
The collaboration was among the issues discussed at a recent meeting of state officials in Ensenada.
"We're coming out of very violent years, between 2007 and 2008, when Tijuana was a city in great chaos," said María del Pilar Sainz Kennedy, the director of a commission focused on security issues made up of citizens in Baja which advises state officials.
"We've come a long way, but there is still much work to be done," she said.
The Baja state government is eager to do more public/private partnerships to address violence, improve public perception and attract more foreign investment.
Israeli companies are showing some interest in making deals. In the last month, representatives from numerous Israeli companies have met with Baja officials to discuss investments and long-term partnerships.
