The New Children's Museum Increases Summer Hours
The New Children’s Museum in downtown San Diego is ready for summer. KPBS culture reporter Angela Carone says as the days get longer, so will the museum’s hours.

The New Children’s Museum is now open seven days a week through Labor Day. During the summer months, attendance at the museum increases by about 25 percent.

Camps are a big draw during this time, where kids can learn everything from graffiti to puppetry. There's even a camp on how to build forts.

The museum continues its Target-sponsored Free Second Sunday program when admission is free on the second Sunday of the month (this Sunday, June 9th, is the next one).

On June 22nd, the museum will host its first Mass Creativity Day, made possible by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation. NCM has been placing artists in San Diego community centers where they work with kids to create neighborhood portraits.

Mass Creativity Day will showcase those portrait projects, such as Hyper Local News, led by local artist David White. "His project idea is that kids would report on topics that were of interest to them. They were videotaped and he's created little news stories about those communities," said Julianne Markow, NCM's executive director. At Mass Creativity Day, children can take part in this community newsroom and report their own TV stories.

The museum's "Trash" exhibit will remain up through the summer. A new museum-wide exhibit about food will open in the fall. It's called "Feast: The Art of Playing With Your Food."
