Orchestra Nova is canceling the rest of their 2012-2013 season due to the sudden resignation of conductor and artistic director Jung-Ho Pak and an impasse in labor talks with the local musicians union.
In a statement released this morning, Nova CEO Beverly Lambert says "with no reasonable hope of a successful outcome to the negotiations and the loss of our conductor, it was virtually impossible to deliver the rest of our season.”
That includes four concert series in the regular season and the holiday concerts in December.
Nova has been involved in contentious labor talks with the local musicians union since September. The nature of union contracts and salary are both factors. The sudden resignation of Pak surprised many in the community. Nova says he wasn't able to realize his vision of marrying classical music with theatrical performance under the standard musician contracts.
The musicians don't want to do away with the traditional contracts. You can read more about their reasons here.
Nova will offer current ticket holders the opportunity to exchange their tickets for performances at 22 other local arts organizations, including the San Diego Symphony and the La Jolla Playhouse.
