It's no secret that I love zombies so when I had an opportunity to interview Max Brooks ("The Zombie Survival Guide" and "World War Z") at Comic-Con on Wednesday I shambled... um, I mean I leapt at the chance.
Here's the thing, zombies may be braindead and mentally challenged but the people who make good zombie movies and books are often smart, irreverent, and quite astute about social issues. What these clever folks realize is that zombies are the perfect blank slate for social commentary. George A. Romero knew that when he launched the modern zombie film in 1968 with "Night of the Living Dead." Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright reaffirmed that with "Shaun of the Dead" in 2004. And Max Brooks proves it with his books "The Zombie Survival Guide" and World War Z."
The Zombie Survival Guide" provides useful information in fighting off zombies or dealing with any type of disaster. The tips are genuinely useful so it annoyed Brooks that the book was placed in the humor section. So he followed that up with the novel "World War Z," in which a zombie outbreak leads to a breakdown in social order and structure. "World War Z" is currently in troubled production with Brad Pitt starring and producing. Brooks has nothing to do with the film and confesses that he doesn't know much about the production.
Here's an interview I did with him on Wednesday.
