On the Red Carpet

Well it wouldn't be the Oscars if there wasn't a red carpet and an odd assortment of designer clothes to comment on.

Here are some photos from the red carpet at this year's Academy Awards. There were so many bad dresses that I decided to focus mostly on the good.

The next generation of actresses showed some class. Hailee Steinfeld (nominated fro "True Grit") and Jennifer Lawrence (nominated for "Winter's Bone"). A friend quite accurately noted that it's all right for the teenaged Steinfeld to look like a Disney Princess, and Lawrence proved that less is more in more ways than one.

And if you are Helena Bonham Carter -- and Tim Burton's main squeeze -- you can rock an eccentric frock even if you did get nominated for playing royalty in "The King's Speech."

First of all Kathryn Bigelow looked awful in the red sack of a dress. Last year (before she was an Oscar winner) she probably dressed herself and had a lovely, sleek silver gown. This year somebody else probably dressed her and advised her to go with some fancy designer who would make her look terrible. Plus what's really freaky is that she gave the best director award to Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech") and he looked eerily like James Cameron, her ex-husband and the man she beat out last year for the Best Director Oscar.
