Culture Lust Weekend: Luscious Noise, Alison Saar and 'Hamlet'

Conductor John Stubbs and Luscious Noise are back at Anthology this Sunday, continuing their mission to bring classical music out of stuffy concert halls. The music selections will include Grieg’s Holberg Suite and Mozart Divertimento, and visual excerpts will include the film noir classic “The Third Man." Members of the San Diego Symphony will accompany Prima Ballerina Denise Dabrowski, who will perform “The Dying Swan” in a signature solo.

Bringing The Theatre to “a theater near you,” National Theatre Live broadcasts British stage performances to movie theaters around the world. This Friday and Saturday, splurge on an evening at the Gaslamp Stadium Theater to see "Hamlet," this time with popcorn.

Welcome Tony Award-winning actress Alice Ripley to San Diego this Tuesday as Broadway San Diego hosts the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical "Next to Normal" currently on its national tour. According to local critics, you don't want to miss this one.

Six years ago Jean Isaacs and Steve Baker met over their need for a pianist and dance company, respectively. Three months and many long rehearsals later, Isaacs and Baker realized they had chemistry inside and outside of San Diego Dance Theater. Now they’re in love and gearing up to release their annual “Cabaret Dances." Titled "By George, By Jean," the show will feature 12 Gershwin tunes, for which Isaacs has creating new dances. The fun starts Friday night and runs through the weekend.

In a 99.9% true expose of her life, Moxie theatre has brought this true survival story to the stage, and set it to the tune of a live band.

Sculptor Alison Saar is the latest artist-in-residence at Lux Art Institute, which means she is working on-site. Saar's sculptures reference fertility, African and Haitian folklore, contemporary African-American culture, Catholicism, mythology, voodoo, and the practices of “outsider” artists. Saar represents the latest in an impressive line of artists coming through Lux, offering San Diegans the opportunity to talk with artists about their process.

Turning 50 is a big deal even for universities, and tonight the La Jolla Athenaeum Music & Arts Library is celebrating the University of California at San Diego’s big five-o with a retrospective exhibition of their renowned Stuart Collection. New additions and old favorites will all be honored with some of the artists in attendance.
