"Gangster" was selected by public online voting. This year, a record 2,338 votes were cast, and the race was close: "Gangster" beat out Luis Alberto Urrea’s “Into the Beautiful North” by only 27 votes.
The five year old One Book, One San Diego program is a collaboration between the San Diego Public Library and KPBS. The event series unites San Diego through book chats, author and scholar lectures, and film screenings that relate to the themes of a single book.
Events surrounding "Gangster" will take place next year.
