People mourn at a makeshift memorial site near the Al Noor mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, Tuesday, March 19, 2019.

The shooting at two mosques in New Zealand last week is putting a more intense focus on a series of interfaith discussions in San Diego.

The interfaith series between Muslims and non-Muslims began only last week and will continue through the season of Lent. The purpose of the talks is to build bridges between faith communities in San Diego and dispel myths about Islam.

The discussions are being organized by Saalam, a nonprofit that aims to promote understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims.

The next event in the series is a unity vigil that is taking place at 6 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, 2728 Sixth Ave. in San Diego. The following discussions will be held Wednesdays at 6 p.m. at the same location through April 17.

Steve Slocum, founder of Saalam, and Arway Alkawaja, who will be taking part in the discussions, join Midday Edition on Tuesday to discuss what they hope the series accomplishes.
