Rescan Day for San Diego County is March 26

Update: Rescan Day has been rescheduled to March 26 for KPBS and FOX 5 San Diego (KSWB). NBC 7 (KNSD) and Telemundo 20 (KUAN) will move frequencies on March 14.

KPBS, NBC 7 (KNSD), Telemundo 20 (KUAN), and FOX 5 San Diego (KSWB) are moving frequencies on March 14, 2019. As a result, viewers who watch TV for free with an over-the-air antenna must rescan their TVs on March 14 after 12 pm to continue watching these stations. Viewers do not need to purchase new equipment or services to rescan their televisions. Individuals can simply use their TV, remote control or converter box to rescan. Rescanning is when a TV finds all of the available channels in an area.

Viewers who watch KPBS, KNSD, KUAN, and/or KSWB through a cable or satellite service or through digital platforms do not need to rescan their TVs. Stations’ current over-the-air channel assignments/numbers will not be affected. Audiences can continue to watch NBC 7 (KNSD) on 39.1, Telemundo 20 (KUAN) on 48.1, FOX 5 (KSWB) on 69.1 and KPBS on 15.1.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) held an auction of broadcast airwaves to provide more channels for wireless internet broadband services. The FCC is requiring nearly 1,000 stations nationwide, including KPBS, KNSD, KUAN, and KSWB, to move to new frequencies to make room for wireless internet services.

“As our television stations prepare to move to new broadcast frequencies, it is imperative that we inform our audiences how they can continue to receive the programming they need and enjoy. ‘Rescan Day’ in San Diego County is a combined effort by NBC 7, Telemundo 20, Fox 5 San Diego, and KPBS to inform viewers about this transition as early as possible, and to encourage them to rescan their televisions on March 14. We’re working together to ensure that all four stations can continue to serve our community by bringing quality programming, sports and the breaking news that our viewers depend on daily,” said KNSD, KUAN, KSWB, and KPBS in a joint statement.

To rescan on March 14, 2019 select "scan" or "auto tune" on the TV or converter box control menu to start the scanning process. Instructions are usually available by pressing the "set-up" or "menu" buttons on the remote control.
