A well-known and beloved lion at the San Diego Zoo was euthanized Wednesday because his age-related illnesses worsened, the zoo said.
M’bari was 15 years old and has been under veterinary care for some time but the lion’s condition worsened in recent days, the zoo said.
The zoo’s animal care staff tried to modify his habitat to make him more comfortable but his condition continued to deteriorate.
"This morning, because of his worsening quality of life, animal care staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him," the zoo said in a statement.
M’bari was well-known to zoo visitors and whose roars could be heard throughout the zoo in the mornings and afternoons.
He was often seen lounging around with his mate, Etosha, in their Elephant Odyssey habitat.
