San Diego State University was ranked as the 25th best college in the United States for veterans, and second-best in California, the school announced Friday.

The rankings were published by the Military Times, which rated the University of South Florida, in Tampa, as the best in the U.S. Rutgers, in New Jersey, was second. The top school for veterans in California was Cal State San Bernardino, according to the publication.

SDSU currently serves more than 3,200 military-affiliated students, including veterans, active-duty and reservists, as well as military dependents. Last year, the school ranked 11th on the Times' list.

The Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center provides resources for them and serves as a link to the rest of the university.

"The Veteran's Center strives to support all of our military-connected students with a one-stop shop approach," said Joan Putnam, center director.

"At the center, military-affiliated students can learn about the variety of services SDSU offers, including scholarships and career support."

Among other local schools, the University of San Diego ranked 45th in the U.S., and Cal State San Marcos 55th.

The Military Times said the rankings were based on answers to a 150-question survey and data collected from federal agencies. Considerations included costs, academic credits provided for prior military experience and training, and resources provided to former members of the armed services.

Earlier this week, the San Diego Community College District reported that its three main campuses -- City, Mesa and Miramar -- were named "Military Friendly" by Victory Media, which publishes G.I. Jobs, STEM Jobs and Military Spouse.

More than 12,000 veterans, active-duty military and military dependents attend the three community colleges.
