The Sweetwater Valley Little League all-star team's opening game in the Little League World Series Thursday in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, was postponed to Friday at 11 a.m. because of the rain.
Heavy rain fell Thursday and was expected to continue into the night.
The game against the team representing Kentucky's Bowling Green Eastern Little League, the Great Lakes Regional champion, was scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. PDT Thursday. It has been postponed to Friday at 11 a.m. PDT.
"In an interest to give all teams the opportunity to play with full player availability and ideal field conditions, keep the Little League Baseball World Series on schedule, and provide fans and visitors with the best experience, we have decided to hold all first-round games tomorrow," said Patrick Wilson, Little League International Tournament Director.
Kelly Lannom's 12-year-old son Walker plays second base for the Sweetwater team. Kelly Lannom is in Pennsylvania with the team.
She said that though her son and his team live and breathe baseball all year long, staying grounded is more important than winning.
"You know if they do end up losing a game that's going to be a great experience for them too. I think any part of this is amazing and a treat for these kids no matter how far you get," Lannom said.
She said there are two things her son should get out of the Little League World Series experience.
"I'd like him to walk away being humble but also proud of what he's accomplished," Lannom said.
