Growing up in the neighborhood of Golden Hill a lot of the best memories of my life took place at Balboa Park.
I rode the train, the carousel (which I believe goes faster than any carousel I've ever been on) and the "butterflies" countless times. I would climb "the big tree" near the San Diego Natural History Museum and pretend I would live there some day. I played in the fountain, had ice cream at the snack shack. Spent hours at the botanical gardens sitting and reading. My favorite museum as a child was the San Diego Museum of Man (and the ladies who made tortillas on the weekends). The memories are endless.
I love Balboa Park so much I had to get married there. My husband and I were married at the chapel at the Museum of Man and had a small dinner reception at The Prado. That was 10 years ago this past May. We continue to make memories with our children. It will always be a special place to me.
I've asked my husband if I pass before he does to sprinkle some of my ashes throughout the park in all of my favorite places. Hopefully that won't happen for a few more decades, but it has been and will always be a special place. I'm happier when I'm there.
KPBS is collecting your Balboa Park memories as the city marks the 100th anniversary of Balboa Park's 1915 Panama-California Exposition.
