A man carrying an umbrella on the Cal State San Marcos campus prompted a lockdown Wednesday morning after he was mistaken for possibly carrying a weapon.
Locking down the campus after reports of a gunman is campus policy, a security officer said.
Police conducted a sweep of the campus and asked people to shelter in place after receiving a report shortly before 9 a.m. of a possible gunman. Officers from the Cal State San Marcos Police Department, San Diego County Sheriff's Department, county Probation Department and the Palomar College Police Department searched the campus room by room after the initial report.
Traffic en route to the university was diverted during the lockdown.
As of 9:38 a.m., the campus had been given the all clear, Cal State San Marcos spokeswoman Cathy Baur said. She said the suspect had been located and did not have a weapon, but was carrying an umbrella.
Classes are not in session, but orientation is taking place. Students return on Monday.
