San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald announced Tuesday the city has received a grant to build skate parks in City Heights and Linda Vista. The nearly $4.5 million comes from the state Department of Housing and Community Development and will sustain both skate parks through design and construction phases, Emerald said.
City Heights youth have long called for a place to skateboard, framing a sophisticated and persistent campaign around citywide discussions about inequities in park space and street infrastructure.
"Our youth have been working towards getting a skate park in City Heights for quite some time. I would like to thank them for spearheading this effort because without them this would not be possible," Emerald said in a press release.
The parks will be added to existing public parks — the Linda Vista Community Park and Park De La Cruz.
