San Ysidro School District Superintendent Under Investigation

California's political watchdog is investigating the head of a school district in San Diego who took $2,500 in cash from a contractor.

The target of the probe is Manuel Paul, superintendent of the San Ysidro School District.

The California Fair Political Practices Commission sent Paul a letter last month notifying him that it was investigating.

U-T San Diego says Paul didn't respond to messages seeking comment but his attorney says Paul is cooperating.

Paul has acknowledged that he received the money two years ago from a builder seeking work from the district. He claims the money was spent in Tijuana to buy campaign signs for a school board member.

State law does not permit campaign contributions of $100 or more to be given in cash
