Dumanis says she can't imagine the pain Diana Gonzalez's family is going through. Gonzalez's body was found in a San Diego City College bathroom last week. Two weeks before her murder, Gonzalez told police he had kidnapped, strangled and raped her. The husband was released from jail after Dumanis' office declined to prosecute.
"In this case we were unable to file charges because there was not proof beyond a reasonable doubt."
A police report stated that Gonzalez's body had injuries. But Dumanis refused to elaborate on what proof the case lacked.
"We're not going to try our murder case in the press," she said. "We want to make sure that we hold the person responsible for Diana's death."
Police believe the husband is in Mexico. Meanwhile, Dumanis plans to hold a news conference today to talk about the 100 percent increase in domestic violence related homicides last year in the county.
