Fair Employment And Housing Office Closure Will Not Affect Services In SD

The scheduled closure of the office of the Department of Fair Employment and Housing in San Diego has caused advocacy groups to criticize the department, but the budget cuts may not have as big an impact on the region as they originally thought.

Last week, critics said San Diegans would not be able to easily access services provided by the department.

The department hears discrimination complaints concerning employment, housing and public accommodation.

Annmarie Billotti is the chief deputy director of programs. She says people should not be concerned.

“During the investigation, if determined that a face-to-face meeting would be necessary, then a DFEH staff member would travel to meet with a member of the public, not vice versa,” she said.

Billotti says about 60 percent of complaints are already made via telephone.

People can file complaints online or by calling the toll-free number, 1-800-884-1684.
