New Children's Museum Hits Fundraising Goal

San Diego’s New Children’s Museum is celebrating a major fundraising accomplishment. The museum has raised $10 million since it opened in May 2008, despite the tough economic climate.

Half of that money came from more than 350 individual donors. The museum secured an anonymous matching donation by getting those contributions before July 1st.

The funds will go toward paying construction debt and the museum’s operating costs. One of those operating costs is supplying paint, clay and other materials for the museum’s hands-on activities.

Nine-year-old Naya Tamariz said it’s these activities that set the Children’s Museum apart from a regular art museum.

“Well, this is meant for the kids so we can actually enjoy things here. Sometimes at other museums it’s kind of boring because all you normally look at is just stuff. Here you get to do it,” she said, while sculpting a tea set out of clay.

The museum’s current exhibit is called Animal Art and will run through next May.
