Elected officials from around San Diego County say if California doesn’t pass a budget soon, it will mean the loss of thousands of jobs in the region. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has the story.
Millions of dollars worth of infrastructure projects in San Diego County could be paralyzed if state legislators can’t reach a compromise on the budget. Investors who normally buy bonds that fund the projects are holding off until California resolves its budget problem. Members of the San Diego Association of Governments , including Mayor Jerry Sanders, called on lawmakers to fix the deficit.
Sanders: It is absolutely critical that our state leaders set aside their partisan bickering and act swiftly on budgetary agreement to fix this problem without taking money from local governments. Jobs are at stake, thousands of jobs and today we need more of them, not less.
16 hundred jobs hang in the balance if four major highway projects in the county are stopped.
