450 Pink-Slipped San Diego Teachers Taking School District to Court

San Diego public school teachers who got pink slips last month are taking the school district to court this week. They're hoping to force the district to rescind layoff notices. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.

About 450 teachers are taking part in a series of legal proceedings in administrative court this week. Lawyers representing union teachers and the school district are expected to go over each case to determine whether the district had the right to issue that employee a layoff notice.

Union president Camille Zombro says many teachers who have seniority got pink slips and others got notices even though they're names weren't on the layoff list.

Zombro: We are finding extensive mistakes in seniority information in credentialing information. And we believe if someone is laid off improperly in terms of the information, that as to be rescinded.

San Diego district officials say there were some mistakes. And they have rescinded a number of layoff notices already. They encourage teachers who believe they got a notice in error to work with the district.
