The online company Google will begin digitizing tens of thousands of UC San Diego library books this month. Its part of a larger effort to make university-level research and literature accessible to the masses. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.
UC San Diego is one of only two UC schools picked by Google to contribute to its Book Search library project.
The first shipment of UCSD library books will be sent this week
Google chose the university because of its exceptional collection of social sciences and east asian books. In fact all of the books from east asia are written in Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
University librarian Brian Schottlaender is thrilled to be part of the project.
Schottlaender: I am very excited about it. I think the UC San Diego libraries are uniquely positioned to be part of this effort to make that access more broadly available to the general public.
Schottlaender says all the books should be available online in about six months. The other university taking part in Google's library project is UC Santa Cruz.
