Tom Fudge: Jerry Coleman has spent a big part of his career as the voice of the Padres . In fact, he recently was inducted into the broadcasting wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame . But there's a lot more to Jerry Coleman than just that, and you know this if you follow baseball. Jerry Coleman was a starting second baseman for the New York Yankees in the late Forties and early Fifties. In fact, he was named the most valuable player of the 1950 World Series. In fact, if he hadn't been called to serve in Korea, he might have made it to Cooperstown as a ballplayer.
But that's the other remarkable thing about Coleman: his service to his country. Coleman is the only Major League player to have served in both World War II and Korea. He was also a Marine pilot, by the way.
