Proposed Budget Would Cut Seasonal Lifeguard Staffing

Governor Schwarzenegger's proposed budget reductions would cut seasonal lifeguard staffing at seven state beaches in San Diego County. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

The governor would cut lifeguard staffing in half at San Onofre, Carlsbad, Torrey Pines, South Carlsbad, San Elijho, Cardiff and Silver Strand State Beaches. The proposal is part of Schwarzenegger's larger plan to close state parks and reduce staffing to balance the state budget.

San Diego Assemblywoman Lori Saldana says it's counterproductive.

Saldana : The state has invested in advertising to attract people here because of our natural beauty. And that includes many of these state parks that the Governor is now proposing for closure or cutbacks. I don't believe it makes sense to take away our natural attractions.

She says the plan to reduce lifeguards would put swimmers at risk. Saldana also says closing parks creates an opportunity for vandalism.
