Crews continue to work at the site of a sewage spill in the Buena Vista Lagoon, on the border between Carlsbad and Oceanside. More than five million gallons of raw sewage spewed into the lagoon after a sewer main broke Sunday evening. KPBS Radio's Andrea Hsu reports.
The good news - according to Cari Dale of Carlsbad Municipal Water - is that as of Monday night, the break area had been contained and no new sewage was leaking into the lagoon. And this morning, progress has been made in repairing the break.
Dale: We have a contractor that has removed the damaged section of pipe. They're preparing to move new pipe into the hole and get the wastewater flowing again.
Meanwhile more than a mile of beach in Carlsbad has been closed. Area residents are being urged to reduce flushing their toilets, washing dishes, and running the laundry machine to the greatest extent possible.
For KPBS I'm Andrea Hsu.
