The City of San Diego uses more green power than any other local government in the country. The ranking is based on the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power list of businesses and governments that use power from renewable energy sources. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders says the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant is a good example of the city's efforts.
Sanders: This plant has become self-sufficient for its energy needs because we have found ways to capture biogas, a natural by-product of the sewage treatment process, and to use it to generate electricity.
Sanders says using green power to run the city's treatment and reclamation plants saves more than $5.4 million a year.
