Trolley's Greenline reviving public transportation interest

This week the San Diego Trolley is celebrating its first year of providing direct transportation between Old Town and East County. Trolley officials say the Green Line has revived San Diego's interest

This week the San Diego Trolley is celebrating its first year of providing direct transportation between Old Town and East County. Trolley officials say the Green Line has revived San Diego's interest in public transportation. Trolley spokesman Luis Gonzalez says 40-percent of Green Line passengers are first time users of public transportation.

He says the San Diego State University stop has introduced a younger crowd to the perks of mass transit and has led to a demand for extended service hours:

Gonzalez: A lot of times there's a lot of different activities that take place downtown and in different areas where a lot of young riders and a lot of our other riders that live in East County want to go and so that's why we also want to increase late night service.

Starting in September the Green Line will run three hours later, until almost two a.m. Gonzalez says more than 22,000 riders use the Green Line daily.
