Immigration reform hit a standstill in the U.S. Senate over whether to give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. But Democrats like California Senator Barbara Boxer backed a compromise bill put forth by Republicans. Jill Morrison reports from Capitol Hill.
The new legislation written by Republicans would divide illegal immigrants into three categories. Those who've been in the U-S for less than two years would risk deportation. Illegal immigrants living in California for less than five years would be forced to go to the border with Mexico, pay a fine and apply for a guest worker program to legalize their status. Critics argue these divisions make the bill too complicated, but Boxer is backing the move.
Boxer: It is complicated. It is more complicated. But in the spirit of compromise that in and of itself is not a deal breaker.
Senator Boxer says it is a political fix- that could still keep illegal immigrants in the shadows. But she says it is necessary to move immigration reform forward in the Senate. From Capitol Hill, Jill Morrison, KPBS News.
