With the natural world serving as a recurring metaphor in her compositions, Gabriella Smith's sonically imaginative piece, Bioluminescence Chaconne, sets the stage for our program. Acclaimed soloist Nancy Zhou shares her mesmerizing virtuosity in Vivian Fung's gamelan-inspired Violin Concerto No. 1. In the latter half of the performance, the La Jolla Symphony Chorus joins the orchestra, presenting a vibrant selection of French masterpieces by Debussy, Fauré, and Ravel.
