Various pieces by Franz Liszt (1811-1886)

The genius of the great Russian-born choreographer, George Balanchine, has never blazed more brightly than in Emeralds, Act 1 of his famous full evening ballet Jewels. Emeralds is a representation of French elegance, considered “an evocation of France – the France of elegance, comfort, dress, perfume,” recalling the 19th century dances of the French Romantics.

Pelléas et Mélisande (1898) and Shylock (1889) by Gabriel Fauré

Last performed by City Ballet of San Diego in November 2016

City Ballet of San Diego’s performance of Emeralds is licensed by The George Balanchine Trust
