On the third Thursday of every month, the museum offers free admission to all visitors with extended hours through 8 p.m.
On March 21, join us in honoring artist Robert Irwin's (1928 – 2023) legacy of artistic contributions to the San Diego community and beyond through various activations on Free Third Thursday at MCASD in La Jolla.
Activations include:
From 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. - screening of Irwin's MCASD Retrospective film in the video porch, and on view through Sunday, March 24
From 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. - Polaroid photo op with Robert Irwin's 1º 2 º 3 º 4º (1997) with artist Bringo Riedel
At 6 & 7 p.m. - Tours featuring Irwin's contributions to the Light and Space Movement
Giveaway opportunities for Irwin catalogs with The Shop. In-person entry only.
A Members-exclusive giveaway of a Robert Irwin catalog bundle. In-person entry only.
Refreshments available for purchase by The Kitchen until 2 p.m. Grab and go counter open until 4 p.m.

About the Artist:
Robert Irwin (born Sept. 12, 1928) is an influential American artist recognized for his significant contributions to the Light and Space movement. His innovative work often blurs the boundaries between art and the surrounding environment. In October 2023, Robert Irwin passed, leaving a legacy of artistic contributions to the San Diego community and beyond.
Irwin’s longstanding connection with MCASD dates to the 1960s. Irwin played a crucial role in the design of the museum's downtown location, which opened in 2007. His involvement in shaping the museum space reflects his commitment to creating immersive and experiential environments, aligning with his artistic philosophy.
The collaboration between Robert Irwin and MCASD showcases the artist's dedication to transforming spaces into dynamic, perceptual experiences.
