Whether silenced by political oppression, the horrors of war, or societal and ideological imperatives, the composers on this program managed to create lyrical and hopeful works often in the most challenging or horrific of circumstances. From Schulhoff and Messiaen composing in Nazi concentration camps to Fanny Mendelssohn struggling for recognition in the shadow of her famous brother, from a Montgomery piece written in the height of the COVID-19 lockdown to Shostakovich’s brilliant response to the horrors of war, these pieces raise us up and give us hope.
