San Diego Zoo’s newest addition to the family is a healthy baby hippo.
The zoo welcomed the newborn calf Friday to its Lost Forest habitat, according to a statement released by the zoo. It is the twelfth calf born to parents Funani and Otis. Guests at the zoo will be able to catch a glimpse of the baby with its mother, Funani, during normal operating hours.
Experts say hippopotami are not endangered, but their habitats have been greatly reduced in the last 200 years. The demand for hippo ivory has also affected their population.
The San Diego Zoo currently works with a variety of species to prevent their extinction.
