The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County dropped two-tenths of a cent overnight to $3.213.
The average price has dropped a penny over the past two days after falling by eight-tenths of a cent on Thanksgiving and has now fallen 6.4 cents over the past 11 days. But despite the streak of decreases, Thursday's average gas price was the highest it had been on Thanksgiving since 2013.
A large part of the blame for the high holiday prices was the 12-cent per gallon gas tax that went into effect the first of the month.
"Gas prices declined after the wholesale market completely recovered from supply worries earlier this month and dropped back to the same levels of mid-October,'' said Jeffrey Spring, the Automobile Club of Southern California's corporate communications manager. "However, the 12-cent gas tax that took effect Nov. 1 makes it unlikely we will see prices drop to that level unless wholesale gasoline prices continue to fall.''
Today's average price is 3.1 cents less than a week ago but 18 cents more than a month ago and 47.4 cents higher than on this date last year. San Diego's average price today was 1.7 cents higher than the statewide average and 69.5 cents more than the national average.
