The organization that runs the Holiday Bowl announced Monday an agreement with the city of San Diego to sell luxury suites at all Qualcomm Stadium events.
The deal covers the Holiday Bowl game in December, San Diego State University football contests and upcoming concerts headlined by U2 and Coldplay, according to the San Diego Bowl Game Association.
The announcement did not include other details, such as prices. Holiday Bowl officials said the suites seat four to eight people — with some larger ones available — and food and drinks would cost extra. SDSU and other event organizers will receive a percentage of the revenues, according to the Holiday Bowl.
The future of Qualcomm Stadium has been in flux since January, when the Chargers announced they were leaving for Los Angeles. The city hopes to shutter the money-losing facility at the end of the 2018 college football season, and has over 500 events — many of them small — scheduled until then. The Chargers managed the luxury suites when the National Football League team was the stadium's primary tenant.
San Diego State officials have been discussing an extension of its lease to buy the school time to find a new home for the Aztecs football season. SDSU also desires the property for future campus expansion.
However, a group of investors has qualified a development project for the Mission Valley land for a public vote, most likely in the November 2018 general election, which would limit what city officials can do for the property.
