A driver in a pickup truck rolled his vehicle off the Coronado Bay Bridge Saturday, killing four people on the ground. The victims were attending a festival of motorcycle enthusiasts in Chicano Park.
Lee Swanson, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department, said the driver is in the hospital with major traumatic injuries. One more of the injured was severely hurt, while seven suffered minor injuries.
A spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said the injured driver has been placed under arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
The driver was identified as Richard Anthony Sepolio, a 25-year-old on-duty Navy serviceman stationed in Coronado. He could face four counts of vehicular homicide, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. KFMB reported the truck went through a tree before hitting the ground. The pickup truck landed on a tented booth that had been set up in front of a stage, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Four people in the booth were killed.
Swanson said the driver, alone in his truck, was southbound on Interstate 5, heading for the Coronado Bay Bridge just before he lost control of his vehicle.
