"We reject the president-elect!"
That was one of many chants heard from one thousand-plus people who marched against President-elect Donald Trump through Balboa Park in San Diego on Saturday afternoon.
They also chanted "Not my president" and "Love trumps hate," holding up signs with similar messages. Latinos, blacks, Asians, LGBT community members, feminists and others took part in the protest, saying they felt Trump fueled hatred against minorities.
Ronnell Johnson, a 23-year-old black gay protestor, said he believes Hillary Clinton should be elected president because she won the popular vote.
"I don't want the system to choose for me anymore," he said of the electoral college.
He said he has experienced racist attacks on social media since Trump rose to power on the political stage.
"It's almost like he's opened a door for people who are very, very hateful," he said.
Another protestor, Cindy Rocha, 33, agreed she thinks Trump has fueled racism against minorities. She held a sign saying, "No hate."
"I don't want a president that stands for hatred," said the Mexican-American woman.
The march started and ended on the intersection of Presidents Way and Park Boulevard.
Pro-Trump supporters watching the march shouted at the protestors, "Get over it! You lost!"
