The county of San Diego still needs 140 poll workers for next week's primary election, especially those who are bilingual, the Registrar of Voters office announced Tuesday.
The needs include 42 Spanish speakers, 37 Vietnamese speakers, seven Filipino speakers and three Chinese speakers.
The registrar's office is required by federal law to provide bilingual poll workers and voting materials to voters who speak Spanish, Filipino, Vietnamese and Chinese. Also, a survey by UC California Berkeley showed a need for speakers of Khmer, Japanese, Korean and Hindi at about 20 precincts, according to the registrar's office.
Poll workers receive a stipend ranging from $75 to $175 depending on the assignment, and those who are bilingual receive an extra $15 if assigned to provide language assistance.
They must be registered voters in California or be permanent U.S. residents, and have transportation to their assigned polling location. They will also need access to the Internet to complete an online training and attend a two-hour class.
