Turner Classic Movies launches its March spotlight program, "Condemned," a look at more than four decades of censorship, the Catholic Legion of Decency and the film industry.
Every Thursday in March, TCM will showcase a collection of films that received the dreaded "C" rating from the Catholic Legion of Decency, an organization that maintained influence over the American film industry for decades.
Providing introductions and context for many of the films will be Sister Rose Pacatte, who is a film critic for two Catholic media outlets.
I interview Sister Rose along with TCM senior vice president of programming Charles Tabesh and blogger Will McKinley about the films selected for the Condemned program. The series kicks off Thursday with a quartet of films from 1933, the year that saw the birth of the Catholic Legion of Decency, which promptly condemned 22 films.
