Saying that Congress had failed to take steps to curb gun violence, President Barack Obama announced on Tuesday that he would take executive actions to strengthen gun control in the nation. The actions include requiring background checks for guns purchased online and at gun shows, overhauling the current background check system, increasing mental health care spending and increasing research on gun safety technology.
Some praised Obama for his bold stance (mostly Democrats); others said he was threatening the right to bear arms (mostly Republicans).
