"Have mercy on me, Lord, I am Cuban.” In 1962, Carlos Eire was one of 14,000 children airlifted out of Havana—exiled from his family, his country and his own childhood by Fidel Castro’s revolution. Winner of the National Book Award, this stunning memoir is a vibrant and evocative look at Latin America from a child’s unforgettable experience.

One Book, Sin Fronteras Selection:The One Book, Sin Fronteras companion book for "Waiting for Snow in Havana” was the original Spanish version of the book, ”Nieve en La Habana” by Carlos Eire.

KPBS is thrilled to kick off its One Book, One San Diego 10th Anniversary Celebration with today’s unveiling of the 2016 book selection, “Waiting for Snow in Havana” by National Book Award-winning author, Carlos Eire. Eire (pronounced “Air”) will be interviewed today at 12 PM on KPBS Midday Edition.

This year is very special for One Book, One San Diego. KPBS will mark the program’s 10th anniversary with events featuring past One Book authors who will return for this great celebration. Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Sonia Nazario and Geraldine Brooks are just two examples of the authors who will make appearances during the One Book season, which runs from September through December.

“We are so proud of the growth of One Book, One San Diego over the past ten years and see it as a true testament to the value our community places on building bridges through literacy and education. It will be fun to revisit the past 10 years of great books and discussions through this exciting series of events,” said Tom Karlo, KPBS General Manager.

In addition to today’s interview, Eire will open the One Book season on Tuesday, September 20 with a presentation and Cuban-inspired reception at the Central Library (330 Park Blvd). “Waiting for Snow in Havana” was selected from more than 250 nominations submitted by area residents earlier this year. It is Eire’s memoir of his childhood in Havana prior to the dawning of the Cuban Revolution in 1959. The selection of “Waiting for Snow in Havana” is timely, given the evolving relationship between the U.S. and Cuba.

Eire’s memoir is a lyrical evocation of the Cuba -- with its tropical scents, bright colors and privileged classes -- he fled in 1962. He was one of 14,000 Cuban children brought to the U.S. without their parents as part of Operation Peter Pan. He is now a professor of religion and history at Yale University.
