Above-average temperatures are expected across San Diego County Wednesday as a spring heat wave continues, but forecasters said cooler weather and April showers are on the way.
On Tuesday, a record thermometer reading of 88 degrees in Chula Vista topped the old April 19 record of 85, set in 1986, according to the National Weather Service. Daily heat records were also set Monday in Chula Vista and in San Diego.
Summer-like weather is expected to continue Wednesday. High temperatures Wednesday were predicted to be 74 to 79 degrees near the coast, 81 to 86 degrees inland, 83 to 88 in the valleys, 75 to 81 degrees in the mountains and 92 to 97 degrees in the deserts.
"High pressure will dominate along the West Coast through the middle of the week. This will keep conditions on the warmer side, especially inland," according to the weather service. "However by the end of the week a storm system will approach the region, resulting in a chance for precipitation late Friday into early Saturday."
Temperatures are also expected to slightly lower Thursday, decrease noticeably on Friday and return to around average by this weekend, forecasters said. Rain over and west of the mountains will be possible starting Friday evening, as will gusty winds in the mountains and deserts.
The scattered showers are expected to drop a tenth of an inch of rain or less in most areas, and up to a third of an inch in the mountains.
