A San Diego water district is making it easy for it's customers to get recycled water for their lawns.
The Olivenhain Municipal Water District on Wednesday opened up it's first filling station in 4S Ranch.
Many districts customers have purple pipes that deliver recycled water to their home.
Residents who don't have those pipes can still get the purple pipe water at the station.
"Our customers can get 300 gallons free, recycled water, to use in their front and backyards to hopefully save the trees and special ornamental landscaping that they have, because we know that their conservation efforts have been huge," said Christy Guerin of the Olivenhain Municipal Water District.
The filling station cost $22,000 to build and it is the first of its kind in San Diego County, Guerin said.
People can use the water to keep trees and other landscaping alive as the drought drags on. The water is not clean enough to drink.
"They drive up to one of our fuel stations. It looks a little bit like a gas station pump, and fill up their container and drive off. And they're free to use it in their yards whatever way they want to," Guerin said
If this station is successful, the district plans to open another in Encinitas.
