The Federal Aviation Administration’s proposed changes to flight routes have some neighbors concerned. They plan to show up in force at a special meeting Tuesday night to discuss the changes.
Situated just past the runway of Lindbergh Field, Point Loma residents are used to the sound of departing jets. A group of residents are concerned that sound could become even louder after the FAA tweaks the airport’s flight paths.
“I don’t want to make this all about home value, but your homes will be worth less if you’re under a flight pattern,” Point Loma resident Julie Connolly said. "It will result in lower property assessments, lower taxes paid to the city."
The FAA is making the change as part of a nationwide modification of flight paths, as the country switches to tracking planes by satellite.
Residents have begun mobilizing in recent weeks as concerns mount that the changes will tighten the flight paths, bringing more planes closer to homes in Point Loma. There are also concerns about how the FAA has measured the potential sound and environmental aspects of the change, Connolly said.
The FAA’s public comment period ends Thursday. FAA representatives have agreed to attend a San Diego County Regional Airport Authority meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the McMillin Event Center at Liberty Station.
