Rare San Diego Rhino Dealing With Medical Issue
A rare rhinoceros is getting medical care at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

A critically endangered northern white rhino is under veterinary care at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

Nola, 41, is one of only five northern white rhinos still alive in the world. One is in a zoo in the Czech Republic and three more are in a wildlife preserve in Kenya.

Zoo officials said they took Nola under veterinary care after they noticed a cyst on her hip. The growth grew too large so animal care officials lanced it and flushed the wound. That operation happened this past weekend.

Zoo officials hope to have test results in a week or two that will tell them the cause of the abscess.

Nola will get regular treatment until the area heals. Keepers said she was a model patient allowing the crew to work on the wound.

Northern white rhinos are critically endangered because of poaching and political unrest in the Congo.
