Investigators sought Thursday to determine who set a series of small arson fires along in a City Heights neighborhood overnight.

The five non-injury blazes on Wightman Street near 52nd Street erupted between 11:45 p.m. Wednesday and 1:30 this morning, according to San Diego police.

They scorched several fences and various debris, including a discarded Christmas tree, some items in the bed of a pickup truck and two fences.

"The area where these fires occurred is littered with trash — several mattresses, big-screen televisions, boxes, clothes and other flammable debris," SDPD spokesman Humberto Hernandez said. "Once again we ask that the community keeps these streets and alleyways clear of trash. These fuel sources invite individuals to burn them, making these fires crimes of opportunity."

No suspects had been identified as of midday.

The Metro Arson Strike Team was investigating.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
