Authorities Wednesday expanded an existing ocean-pollution warning in the area of Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge north to include the entire shoreline of Imperial Beach.

The alert initially was issued after storms hit the region last month, causing rain-driven sewage to enter the United States from Baja California via the Tijuana River, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health.

Signs warning of contamination hazards will stand along the affected beaches until follow-up testing deems them safe again for recreational uses, the DEH advised.

A big decision awaits some voters this April as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
