Golf won’t be the only attraction at this week’s Farmers Insurance Open in Torrey Pines.
Attendees will be offered free valet parking, but the exclusive offer is not for cars — it’s for those who get there on a bike.
The San Diego County Bike Coalition is offering the service to help relieve traffic congestion and give fans an alternative to driving.
"A big part of the reason why bike valet is attractive to organizers is often times people lock their bikes to the fences, around trees, sign posts — sometimes blocking sidewalks and creating access issues," said Kipp Marzullo, an environmental scientist and the bike valet coordinator coalition.
It’s also an opportunity to support a nonprofit without spending any money. Farmers Insurance will donate $10 dollars to the coalition for every bike parked.
Vehicle parking at the tournament can cost anywhere from $10 to $95 dollars a day. At last year’s tournament, the coalition offered the same service and secured about 250 bikes.
The first round of the four-day tournament begins Thursday morning and features Tiger Woods and San Diego golfer Phil Mickelson.
Anyone planning on taking advantage of the valet parking should look for the tennis courts at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. Bike racks and security will be available as early as 7 a.m. throughout the tournament.
