San Diego City Councilwoman and longtime 10News reporter Marti Emerald will undergo surgery for breast cancer, KPBS media partner 10News reported Friday.
"My doctors say I have an excellent prognosis for full recovery, after the usual protocols," Emerald said in a post on her Facebook page Friday.
In the post, the District 9 representative said she learned of the diagnosis while part of a delegation that traveled to Washington, D.C. this week:
“I am writing this post as I prepare for surgery to remove an aggressive breast cancer just diagnosed in the past week.
“I'm looking forward to getting back on feet, back to work and back to the business of serving our city,” she wrote on Facebook. “And I look forward to the opportunity to serve those struggling with breast cancer. As soon as I shake the fog of anesthesia I will use this Facebook site to guide you to resources that may help you or loved ones in your journey for a cure.”
City Council President Todd Gloria called Emerald "a proven fighter."
"I know she'll win this battle and I wish her well," he said. "Her City Council colleagues will support her in any way we can as she focuses on her health and balances the demands of serving her district"
